These can include presenting misleading information about the odds of winning the jackpot; inflating the value of the money won (lotto jackpots are paid out in annual installments over 20 years, with inflation and taxes dramatically eroding the current value); and misleadingly portraying themselves as a \u201cgood cause\u201d (which they aren\u2019t).<\/p>\n
In addition, the advertising that lotteries do engage in is largely at cross-purposes to the larger public interest. The promotion of gambling has negative effects for poor people and problem gamblers, and it\u2019s at odds with a state\u2019s duty to promote its citizens\u2019 health and welfare.<\/p>\n
Finally, lotteries are constantly introducing new games to try to keep their revenue streams up. In doing so, they are creating more gambling addicts and increasing the likelihood of them spending their lives in debt.
