Tropical storms and tornadoes are also becoming more frequent, triggered by warming oceans. Strong winds can destroy buildings, and heavy rainfall causes landslides. In the Philippines, for example, storms such as Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 demonstrated the devastating impact of this phenomenon, killing thousands of people and destroying infrastructure. Forest fires, which often occur during the long dry season, are also being exacerbated by climate change. High temperatures and low humidity create ideal conditions for fires. The forest fires in Australia and Kalimantan highlight the damage caused, both to the environment and to human health. The close relationship between climate change and increased risk of natural disasters requires serious attention from the government, society and individuals. The importance of mitigation efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to prepare communities for potential disasters is very urgent. Good disaster preparedness, public education about risks, and development of science-based policies are strategic steps. The use of technology, such as weather prediction modeling and environmental condition monitoring, can be an effective tool in managing disaster risk.
